MONTEFALCO
ABOUT: The special bragging point about this locale is the local grape, Sagrantino, which is only allowed to be grown in 5 communes in Umbria. This lovely grape is blended with the Sangiovese grapes to make the famous Montefalco Rosso, which is renown worldwide. It is a must to plan at least one wine tasting when coming to Montefalco. If not familiar with Motefalco Rosso, this is a must see destination that is quite easy to get around in.
WHAT TO DO: The most important works of art to see are in the deconsecrated church of San Francesco, which is now part of the town museum. Given the uniqueness of having been an important church that was able to commission great works in its day, today its beautifully restored frescoes and other artifacts make it one of the most important museums in Umbria. The church is notable for its fresco cycle on the life of Saint Francis painted by the Florentine artist Benozzo Gozzoli (1450-52). (Gozzoli also painted the famed Procession of the Magi at Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence.) Along with the frescoes in the basilica of Assisi and those of Luca Signorelli in Orvieto, this Life of Saint Francis is one of Umbria’s most important fresco cycles.
WHERE TO EAT: Montefalco is a quaint village with wine shops, a new day spa, many shops selling the famous local linens, and quite a few fabulous restaurants. One that we highly recommend is Ristorante Coccorone, a lovely venue with indoor and out door dining. We did not know it at the time we visited here, the restaurant Coccorone is known for it’s grilled beef. Specifically their locally grown Chianina steaks that come from locally raised cattle. When you enter are greeted not only by a case containing massive bistecche, but a roaring fire for the daily fare. This little gem does not have a website; however, they do have a facebook page where you can check out their info and location: https://www.facebook.com/RISTORANTECOCCORONE/
